More Than Just Braces
Irmo Smiles provides a complete range of orthodontic options for every
patient needing bite correction or seeking a straighter smile.
Many people think of orthodontics as a method for straightening crooked teeth, but
there’s much more to it than that. Due to a variety of factors out of our control,
our teeth and jaws often develop in a way that provides a problematic bite. Sometimes
the dental arch at the top or bottom is too narrow, or a patient has underbite (when
the lower jaw or bottom teeth jut forward and align in front of the top teeth), overbite
(when the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth too much), or crossbite (when the teeth
overlap incorrectly on the sides). These conditions can result in pain and difficulty
chewing or even speaking. We use specially designed appliances that gently guide the jaw
and teeth into proper alignment while the patient is a child or teen, to prevent serious
issues in the future.
But if you’ve reached adulthood, don’t think you’ve missed your chance. Irmo Smiles offers
many options for you that are discreet and fast and can give you confidence as well as
Using the latest in modern techniques, Dr. Raman can now make braces more comfortable and
attractive than ever. Smaller brackets, thinner wires, and even clear and self-ligating braces
make them more subtle, and new techniques can bring faster results. The time needed for
treatment will vary from person to person but usually can be completed in 6 - 24 months or less.
For cost-effective and time-tested results, traditional metal braces may be the way to go.
Orthodontics for Adults
The majority of people you might see in treatment are in those younger age groups, so many people
associate orthodontic treatment as being for kids. Certainly, treatment is encouraged at a young
age because the bone in the jaw is not as dense and therefore resistant to change. But it’s never
too late to correct your bite or straighten your smile! Adults are often more sensitive to the
appearance of braces and other appliances, perhaps because they have fewer peers with braces than
pre-teens do, or simply because of jobs and activities at which appearance is important. No one wants
the glint of braces to distract from their major presentation or stage debut or ID photo. That’s why
we offer such discreet options as clear brackets and Invisalign™ clear aligners.
Adults have different issues to address when it comes to orthodontics and other dental care. Worn or
missing teeth cause different issues as teeth that grow in with poor alignment. Jaw problems can worsen
over time, as well. We have the ability to create a plan that incorporates several different types of
treatments as well as basic orthodontics. Many adult patients had braces as teenagers, and either want
to take their care a step further or correct some backsliding that may have occurred since then. We can
use Invisalign and accelerated orthodontics methods for correction in half the time.
The Invisalign™ system begins with advanced 3-D computer-imaging technology to prepare your entire treatment
plan from the current positioning of your teeth to your final smile. From this plan, clear thermoplastic
aligners are created. These are similar to teeth-whitening trays and are custom made to precisely fit your
teeth. When you place the first set of aligners, they use gentle forces to move your teeth gently into position.
Approximately two weeks later, you replace them with the next set of aligners, and progress through treatment for
about a year. You only need to come into the office for evaluation every four to eight weeks. Total treatment
time is based on your personal needs and goals.
There are some distinct advantages to the Invisalign system. The clarity of the aligners renders them almost
invisible! People would have to know the aligners or there, or look extremely closely, to be able to detect them.
This gives you much more confidence in your smile while you are in active treatment. Comfort is another benefit.
The aligners are all in one piece, and lack of braces, wires, or headgear eliminates any temporary mouth irritation.
Then there’s the convenience factor. Though you wear the aligners all day as well as while you sleep, they are
easily removable for eating and brushing. You can eat and drink what you want, and no metal or wires means less time
in the dental chair.
is designed for young adult patients over the age of 15. They work just like Invisalign, but each
set of aligners is marked with a blue dot indicator to help teens keep track of when to replace them with the new
set of aligners. Also, because the active lifestyle of the typical teen can cause mishaps like lost aligners,
Invisalign Teen allows up to six free replacement aligners.
A straight smile is not only a more beautiful smile, but a healthier one. Orthodontics are designed not only to
fix crooked teeth, but also to provide overall alignment for proper chewing and jaw movement. Straight, uncrowded
teeth are easier to clean, which helps prevent decay and gum disease. But many patients are deterred by the length
of time often recommended for treatment. Wearing braces for years, and having to be seen for repeated adjustments
and examinations, can be daunting. That’s why we’re happy to offer our patients the AcceleDent™ System, an FDA-approved
complement to traditional braces or aligners that brings fast, excellent results.
Braces work by moving teeth in specific directions. AcceleDent applies microvibrations to the teeth and the underlying
bone to enhance the movements directed by the braces. This accelerates “bone remodeling,” which is the replacement of
old bone with new bone tissue. The result is faster tooth movement and achievement of your goals much earlier than
without AcceleDent. There are no negative side effects, and for some patients, it even makes their braces more comfortable!
The AcceleDent device is very similar to a mouth guard. The patient simply slips the device into the mouth for just 20
minutes per day. This enhances the gentle force applied by braces or aligners, which speeds the rate of tooth movement.
It’s very comfortable and simple to use and has been clinically proven to shorten treatment time. Research has demonstrated
an initial acceleration in tooth movement by 106% in the initial treatment phase, and up to 50% in the subsequent phase.
AcceleDent provides a “Smart Display” so you can record and track your usage. The device is easy to use and simple to clean.
If you’ve been putting off having straight teeth because you don’t want it to take forever – now you don’t have to. You can
have beautiful, straight teeth in about half the time of traditional methods.
